The 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup is the eighth ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament. It is being played in Australia from 16 October to 13 November 2022. Originally, the tournament was to be held in 2020, however, in July 2020, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the tournament had been postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In August 2020, the ICC also confirmed that Australia would host the rearranged tournament in 2022, with the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India in 2021 as originally planned, but was later moved to UAE and Oman. On 21 January 2022, the ICC confirmed all the fixtures for the tournament. Hosts Australia are also the defending champions.
T20 World Cup 2022
The eighth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup is scheduled to commence from October 16 to November 13. The tournament is set to be played in Australia.
This edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was to be held in 2020 but it had to be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, ICC confirmed Australia as the host venue for the rearranged competition in 2022 instead of taking place in India in 2021 as originally planned but was later moved to UAE and Oman.
Earlier this year, ICC confirmed the T20 World Cup Schedule with all the fixtures for the tournament. Host nation Australia are currently the defending champions.
History
The inaugural World Cup in its shortest format took place in South Africa back in 2007. MS Dhoni-led Team India clinched the very first title, etching their names in history. The format later paved way for domestic competitions across various countries that proved to be a success.
Pakistan (2009), England (2010), West Indies (2012 and 2016), Sri Lanka (2014) and Australia (2021) are teams that have been successful in winning the title.
Qualification
The tournament format is such that six teams have been divided into two groups namely, Group 1 and Group 2. In order to progress to the elimination rounds, teams will need to stay in the top two positions in the T20 World Cup Points Table.
The four teams from both the groups will further cross swords in a semi-final format to play for the coveted title in the finals of the T20 World Cup.
Schedule
The ICC T20 World Cup Schedule is set to take place from the 16 October to 13 November 2022 as Australia host the tournament’s shortest format. All teams will select a squad of fifteen players who will be made to participate in the competition.
Venues
ICC confirmed Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney as the venues that will host matches across the tournament. Moreover, the semi-finals will take place in the Sydney Cricket Ground and the Adelaide Oval, while the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host the final.
Teams
The confirmed teams in the group stages of the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup are Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa. Eight teams will play for the remaining four spots in the super 12. Namibia, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, Ireland, Scotland, West Indies will play the qualification rounds to seal their spot in the group stages of the main competition.
